Good Hope Cannery is pleased to present our “Tyee rowboats”!
Starting in 2011, Good Hope Cannery guests will have the rare opportunity to test their skill at Rivers Inlet's “Tyee” rowboat fishery. During Rivers Inlet's historic Cannery days at the turn of the century, fleets of small rowboats would be plying Rivers Inlet’s waters; eagerly awaiting their nets to become laden with salmon.
Since this time, Anglers (including some famous celebrities) have been guided into large “Tyee” (Chinook over 30 pounds) off Vancouver Island’s shoreline in Campbell River, BC as a part of the famous "Tyee Club of British Columbia". With the assistance of Campbell River’s Hilford Burton of Hilmark boats Good Hope is pleased to reintroduce a similar sight within Rivers Inlet’s Trophy area today. Hilmark Boats has created the perfect 14 foot lap strake boat for our application in Rivers Inlet and anglers can expect these to be on the fishing grounds this year!
As our president, George Cuthbert, puts it, “The value of Rivers Inlet’s unique Wannock River Chinook salmon has to be celebrated. Imagine experiencing one of these magnificent creatures up close and personal in a small tyee rowboat – mere inches from the water’s surface”. Anglers wishing to try this method of fishing will have a thorough introduction into the art of maneuvering these boats - including when a large salmon is pulling one around. Take longtime Tyee Club guide Rich Chapple's advice: "They’re safe, stable and can withstand significant waves. Still, one has to be cautious and when playing a fish and it’s best for anglers to be sitting down at all times. I’ve seen fish in the 40s 50s and 60s taken from these boats and it’s always exciting.”
Good Hope Cannery will be storing a small fleet of Tyee row boats at their recently acquired “RIR” property within the trophy area at the head of Rivers Inlet. Anglers who express their interest in advance may reserve their opportunity to participate in this unique fishery. A special pin and certificate will be presented to any angler successfully landing a Chinook out of a Good Hope Cannery rowboat. Special recognition will also be provided to those anglers choosing to release their catch. For more information, please contact us today at 1-800-665-0613.
